Objective:

By the end of this class you’ll be able to understand chords and how they work, basic and advanced picking techniques, harmonies, and chord progressions

Focus on:

Combining Ukulele 101 and Music Theory 101
Knowing the difference between major, minor, and 7s
Picking and strumming techniques
Understanding basic chords and chord progressions

When:

Saturdays: 12pm HST (3pm PST, 6pm EST)

1. Week 1 – Basic exercises

  • A. Worm exercise
  • B. Finger stretches
  • C. Hand stretches
  • D. Interval warm ups

2. Week 2 – Basic finger picking

  • A. In to out technique
  • B. Out to in technique
  • C. I, IV, V progression

3. Week 3 – Ear training (difference in sound between diff types of chords)

  • A. Major chords
  • B. Minor chords
  • C. 7 chords

4. Week 4 – Picking with thumb or index (or pick)

  • A. Proper way to play with thumb
  • B. Using your index as main
  • C. Properly using a pick
  • D. 1 string picking, 2 and etc.

5. Week 5 – Scales and tonal harmony

  • A. Revisit major scales
  • B. 3rds harmony
  • C. Mary had a little lamb main melody and harmony
  • D. Play both parts on A and E strings

6. Week 6 – Advanced strumming techs and patterns

  • A. Triple strum
  • B. Two finger roll
  • C. Four finger roll
  • D. Listen to percussion audio and use strum patterns and techs to get same effect

7. Week 7 – Minor scales and tonal harmony

  • A. Revisit minor scales (show the pattern WHWWHWW)
  • B. 3rds harmony in minor key
  • C. Dm scale with 3rd harmony
  • D. Minor scale harmony exercise

8. Week 8 – IV, V, I progression and root notes

  • A. Show 3 different IV, V, I progression
  • B. Explain root notes
  • C. Use root note to play a melody

9. Week 9 – Alternate chords (inversions)

  • A. IV, V, I progressions in two different inversions
  • B. ii, V, I progressions in two different inversions
  • C. I, vi, IV, V, I progressions in two different inversions

10. Week 10 – Pulls, hammers, and combinations

  • A. Pulls, hammers, and combo techniques
  • B. Bottom string pull offs
  • C. Bottom string hammer-pull
  • D. Bottom and top string combinations during pull offs/hammer-pull
